Pandemic Awareness is very important. A pandemic occurs when a new virus appears in the human population and then spreads easily from person to person worldwide.

Pandemics are different from seasonal outbreaks or “epidemics” of influenza.  These tend to be self limiting and for most, not life threatening. Seasonal outbreaks are caused by sub-types of influenza viruses that already exist in the population.

Pandemic outbreaks are caused by the emergence of a new virus against which, the human population has no immunity. Due to this lack of immunity, the virus is able to infect more humans over a large geographical area and spread rapidly and efficiently from person to person.

Pandemics have been observed for several hundred years with the best-documented pandemics occurring during the last century in:

  • 1918 – 1919 (Spanish flu)
  • 1957 – 1958 (Asian flu)
  • 1968 – 1969 (Hong Kong flu)

These past pandemics have led to high levels of illness and deaths. For further information on pandemics visit Pubic Health England

The Pandemic Awareness eLearning course explains the difference between pandemics and seasonal outbreaks. Additionally, it outlines the physical symptoms and how a virus spreads. The course advises what action should be taken if medical assistance is needed.

Users will understand how good hygiene is the best way to prevent a contamination among the workforce. Other protection measures are discussed and include vaccinations. In addition, this course discusses those employees who are more at risk of infection.  Furthermore, this information is designed to support and complement an organisation’s efforts to implement sensible control measures, in preparation for the possible accelerated spread of a virus in the autumn and winter.
