Description

The Manual Handling Online Training course is the ideal way to train employees in the basics of manual handling. It is also perfect for employees in low risk environments. Manual handling tasks occur wherever people are at work. Any time we use our bodies to move an object, we are manual handling. This can be in an office, a factory, a warehouse, a shop or any other working environment.  Manual handling means using your body to exert force to lift, lower, push, pull, carry, move, hold, restrain or set down a load.

The course also provides an understanding of common musculoskeletal problems and common injuries caused by incorrect carrying and lifting. Instruction is given on the correct handling techniques for lifting, carrying and setting down a load.

Additionally, the importance of assessing every manual task is highlighted during the course. Advice is provided on how to assess each handling activity using the “TILE” principle (task, individual (your own capabilities), load and your working environment).

Furthermore, the Manual Handling Online Training emphasises the responsibility of the employee to fully cooperate with their employer. They should not engage in behaviour likely to endanger the employee or others. Additionally, mechanical aids should be used correctly and dangerous work activities should be reported. Also, any physical impairments that could give rise to risk should be highlighted to the employer.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), manual handling is a broad category of work-related injury. Handling injuries include: injuries due to lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling loads; strains; sprains; trapped fingers and cuts from sharp objects.

The following statistics (2017/18) relate to manual handling injuries of employees that were reported to all RIDDOR enforcing authorities.

  • Handling, lifting or carrying accounted for 21% of all non-fatal injuries reported to RIDDOR in 2017/18
  • In 2017/18, 6.6 million working days were lost due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Manual handling, awkward or tiring positions and keyboard work or repetitive action are estimated to be the main causes of work-related musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Employers reported over 71,000 non-fatal injuries to RIDDOR in 2017/18

As a ‘recycled teacher’, I found that all the information was there and was well structured but I was really disappointed that there was no sound track reading the text or ‘adding value’ to the course. Leaving someone who is a warehouse operative or driver to read the course on their own is from my experience not going to give the best results. I therefore need to go through the course WITH the candidate so that they can get reassurance and support as they are doing the course. Not everyone is a confident reader! Otherwise well presented and intelligently laid oout, giving the candidate plenty to do as they are going along.

  9. Vanessa H.

Very easy to purchase and then send on to our Employees, easy to use menus.

  10. Paul S.

I liked the method of training and questioning, it makes it hard not to get 100% in the final test

  11. Matthew H.

Easy to navigate. The interactive tools make this module enjoyable to complete as well as informative. I am interested now in looking at other training modules available.

  12. JULIAN C.

The course was ok. Good length and covered all the basics. The certificate looks unofficial. My work questioned it as it looked like i had made it on powerpoint. Sort out the Cert at the end and it would be 5 stars.
